Hiked: March 25, 2018 Type: Snowshoe This is from a snowshoe hike to Loon Lake a few years ago. The gate into the campground was closed and unplowed, so there was about a mile or less required to hike to the lake. The conditions were beautiful with the fresh snowfall. Loon Lake and the South Fork of Silver Creek are featured. Thanks for watching! Follow me on Instagram: maryann_ha...

You never know what Mother Nature is going to throw at you. Our first day started at the Kingsbury South trailhead off of State Route 207. Our objective was the gorgeous Star Lake. According to our GPS, it was around 12 or 13 miles. I forgot to turn mine on for the first 3/4 of a mile, so I was at 12.2. Elisa's GPS read 13.7 miles. One of our group lost their tent (oopsie!). I scored a backpacking permit and finally checked one off my bucket list - two nights at Lake Aloha in Desolation Wilderness! We got to the trailhead (at Echo Lake) late, but because it was a short hike (a little over 6 miles), we had plenty of time to set up camp before sunset. There were a number of trail sections that still had snow, and a few spots were steep and slick, so you had to take y...

I'm training to hike the Tahoe Rim Trail thru-hike in late June, so this was a great way to check out a section of the trail to see what the conditions will be for this year. I hiked this in late June of 2019 which was a major snow year for the region. What a difference! There was very little snow on the trail this time, and we were more than a month earlier than in 2019. The best way to be "respectful of this very unique location" is to not blast it on social media. It is a challenge to find for a reason. It needs preserved. Now it is on the trail apps.

    • @MaryannHazel
      @MaryannHazel 25 днів тому

      I'm not sure why you think I "blasted" this site on social media. I did one video on it, covered all the interesting facts about how this place was discovered, reminded people to LNT and that was it. Ironically, the Sierra Club has this listed on their site along with several other videos on UA-cam. Happy trails to you @susanjackson314!

    Thank you for posting this. That is my favorite fall hike near Tahoe. The aspens are spectacular. Heading towards Marlette Lake, if you take the high path, there is a bench right near the creek. If the weather has been cold at night, you can see some gorgeous icicles under the boulders in the creek. I like to sit there and cogitate, about absolutely nothing Another nice fall hike with aspens that I enjoy is Scotts Lake from Big Meadow. Both Scotts and Marlette Lake are great hikes in the spring and summer too.

      Actually, the hike is pretty easy. There is a little scrambling over some big rocks toward the end, but it is a pleasant hike. There are some gradual ups and downs. But it should be doable. And the water is so darned pretty! I hope she enjoys it!

    Beautiful trip! I’m planning on doing this trip early Oct. Looks like it, but is the trail pretty easy to follow? Also, would you recommend doing this trip starting at North Lake, or South Lake? Probably the same if I was guessing. Thanks

    What was the total miles? This info would be of big help and thank you. Did you stage two cars? How did that work?

    • @MaryannHazel
      @MaryannHazel 7 місяців тому

      Sheesh...I thought I put that in the description, but I guess I forgot. My mileage added up to 57.32 miles with 11,509' of ascent, 10,801 of descent, and 187,179 steps!. I left my vehicle parked in the North Lake parking lot and my friend's husband picked us up at the South Lake parking lot which was awesome. Otherwise, I would have been hitching a ride back to North Lake to get my vehicle. I've read that it is pretty easy to get a ride with all the day hikers that go up toward Bishop Pass. I could have walked, but it would have been a long 12-mile road walk to North Lake. Construction was being done in the South Lake parking lot, so you couldn't park vehicles at that time. I'm not sure if that has changed now.
